From ancient times, hemp has been used as a purification plant that purifies objects that purified salt water cannot cleanse. It has been used as a “purifying and cleansing” tool for ritual occasions.
Although, hemp is still widely used in special decorations such as Shimenawa that you can find in shrines (rope used to cordon off consecrated areas or as a talisman against evil), not all Japanese people are aware they are made from hemp.
Hemp plant has been utilized in so many different ways, and in general, the pharmacological effect of the leaves is well known to public.
(In Japan, if you posse cannabis, you will be punished by the Cannabis Control Law, however cannabis is used medicinally in some foreign countries.)
The most valuable part of hemp is the brilliant fiber after removing the bast from the stalk.
(Needles to say, the stalks are not controlled by the Cannabis Control Law.)
The hemp fiber is most important part and contains the purifying and cleansing power in Japan.
Hemp ornaments are made from hemp fiber only as a purifying decoration of Yorishiro that combines the universe, light, water and hemp.
